How to read a surge protector & charger spec sheet
Power gear specs are about safety margins and honest wattage math. Two minutes here protects everything else on your desk.
Surge rating — joules are the armor
Joules measure how much surge energy the protector can absorb over its life: 1,000–2,000J for desk electronics, more is better. It's sacrificial — after big surges the protection quietly wears out, which is why a "protected" indicator light matters. A power strip without a joule rating is just an extension cord.
UPS — batteries for graceful shutdowns
A UPS rides through blips and gives you minutes to save work, not hours of runtime. Size it by watts: your PC + monitor draw, comfortably under the UPS's rated output. Line-interactive models handle brownouts; "simulated sine wave" is fine for most PCs, but active-PFC power supplies prefer pure sine.
Charger wattage math
A "100W" multi-port charger splits its budget when several devices connect — the per-port table in the fine print is the real spec. GaN chargers pack more watts smaller and cooler. USB-C PD is the universal fast-charging language; wattage decides what it can feed (30W phone/tablet, 65W ultrabook, 100W+ big laptops).

- Chargers: read the multi-device split table, not the headline watts.
