How to read a mousepad spec sheet

Yes, mousepads have specs, and they change how your mouse feels more than most mouse upgrades.

Speed vs control surface

Control surfaces (textured cloth) add friction for precise stops — good for design work and tactical shooters. Speed surfaces (smooth, hybrid weaves) glide freely — good for low sensitivity and fast flicks. "Balanced" is the honest default.

Size

Low mouse sensitivity needs room: XL (900×400mm) desk mats cover keyboard and mouse and have become the default for good reason. Standard pads suit high sensitivity and tight desks.

Material and base

Cloth is the versatile default; glass/hard pads are maximum speed and easy cleaning but loud and rough on feet (mouse skates). Stitched edges stop fraying — the first thing that dies on cheap pads. Thicker (4mm+) pads forgive uneven desks.

The 10-second cheat sheet

  • Default: XL cloth desk mat, stitched edges, balanced surface.
  • Precision work: control surface; low-sens FPS: speed surface, size XL.
