How to read a monitor spec sheet

Spec sheets are written to impress, not to inform. Here's what each number actually means, and which ones matter for how you use a screen. (Our quiz weighs all of this automatically — this guide is for checking the work.)

Size and resolution go together

Size (measured diagonally in inches) and resolution (the pixel grid, like 1920×1080) only make sense as a pair — together they set sharpness. A good rule of thumb:

  • 24" → 1080p (Full HD) looks sharp. 1080p stretched to 27" starts to look soft.
  • 27" → 1440p (QHD) is the sweet spot for most people — noticeably sharper, still easy to drive.
  • 27–32" → 4K (UHD) for crisp text and fine detail; ideal for creative work.
  • 34" ultrawide → 3440×1440 — one panel that replaces a dual-monitor setup.

Refresh rate — how smooth motion looks

Measured in hertz (Hz): how many times per second the image updates. 60Hz is the office baseline, 100–144Hz feels dramatically smoother (even just scrolling), and 240Hz+ is for competitive gamers chasing every frame.

Who should care:gamers, a lot. Everyone else benefits too, but past 144Hz the returns shrink fast unless you're playing fast shooters.

Panel type — the biggest personality trait

  • IPS — accurate colors, wide viewing angles. The default recommendation for almost everyone.
  • VA — deep contrast (great for movies and dark rooms), slightly slower pixel response; some ghosting in fast games.
  • TN — fastest and cheapest, but washed-out colors and narrow viewing angles. Only worth it for budget esports.
  • OLED — perfect blacks, instant response, gorgeous. Costs more, and static interfaces left on-screen all day carry some burn-in risk.

Response time — read it skeptically

The "1ms" on the box is usually a best-case marketing number (often measured as MPRT or with aggressive overdrive). What it's trying to describe is how quickly pixels change color — slow panels smear or "ghost" in fast motion. Practical guidance: any modern IPS rated 5ms or better is fine for everything but competitive play, and for esports look for genuine 1ms GtG panels or OLED.

VRR: FreeSync and G-Sync

Variable refresh rate syncs the monitor to your graphics card so frames never "tear" mid-image. FreeSync (AMD) and G-Sync / G-Sync Compatible(NVIDIA) are the two brand names; most modern monitors support both sides in practice. If you game at all, treat VRR as a must-have — it's common even on budget panels now.

Color accuracy — for creative work

Three numbers tell you if a monitor can be trusted for photo, video, or design work:

  • sRGB coverage — the standard web color space. 100% sRGB is the baseline for any creative panel.
  • DCI-P3 coverage — the wider cinema gamut. 95%+ P3 marks a genuinely wide-gamut display.
  • Delta E (ΔE) < 2 — factory-calibrated accuracy good enough that colors match what clients see.

If you're not doing color-critical work, don't pay extra for these.

Brightness and HDR

Brightness is measured in nits: 250–350 is normal indoors, 400+ helps in bright rooms. Be skeptical of "HDR400" badges — that's barely brighter than a normal panel. Real HDR starts around HDR600 with local dimming, and OLED does convincing HDR at lower peak brightness because its blacks are perfect.

Ports and ergonomics — the stuff people forget

  • HDMI 2.1 / DisplayPort 1.4 — needed for high refresh at high resolution; consoles want HDMI 2.1 for 4K120.
  • USB-C with power delivery — one cable to a laptop for video + charging. Huge quality-of-life for laptop setups.
  • VESA mount (100×100) — lets you put the monitor on an arm and reclaim the desk.
  • Stand adjustment — height/tilt/swivel on the included stand, or budget for an arm.

The 10-second cheat sheet

  • Gaming: 1440p · 144Hz+ · IPS or OLED · VRR · real 1ms GtG if competitive.
  • Creative: 4K · IPS · 100% sRGB (95%+ P3 if you grade video) · ΔE < 2.
  • Productivity: 27" 1440p or 4K · IPS · USB-C with charging · adjustable stand.
  • Everyone: ignore "1ms" hype and HDR400 badges; check VESA mounting.
