How to read a microphone spec sheet

Mic listings sell sample rates; what your listeners hear is capsule type, pattern, and how close the mic sits to your mouth.

Dynamic vs condenser

The most important line on the sheet. Condensers are sensitive and detailed — and pick up your keyboard, your fan, and the room echo. Dynamics reject background noise and need you close, which is why streamers in untreated rooms sound better on them. Home office with noise? Dynamic. Treated quiet room? Condenser.

Polar pattern

Cardioid (hears the front, rejects the rear) is what you want for solo voice — it's the default for a reason. Multi-pattern mics add omni (whole room) and figure-8 (two-person interview) modes most people never use.

USB vs XLR

USB is plug-and-play. XLR needs an interface but upgrades forever. USB/XLR combo mics hedge the bet. For a first mic, USB is genuinely fine — the room matters more than the connector.

Sample rate and monitoring

24-bit/48kHz is broadcast standard; 96kHz+ is spec-sheet flex for voice work. What IS worth requiring: a headphone jack for zero-latency monitoring, a mute button you can find, and gain control on the body.

The 10-second cheat sheet

  • Untreated room / streaming: dynamic, cardioid, close to your mouth on an arm.
  • Quiet space, max detail: condenser.
  • Buy the boom arm — position beats any spec on this sheet.
