How to read a desk spec sheet

Desk listings bury the numbers that predict wobble, fit, and whether it will actually stand up with your gear on it.

Standing vs fixed vs converter

  • Electric standing desk: motorized legs, the full experience. Judge by motor count and height range.
  • Fixed height: no moving parts, cheaper, sturdier per dollar.
  • Converter: a riser that sits on your existing desk — the low-commitment path to standing.

Height range — the ergonomic make-or-break

Correct height puts your elbows at 90° — roughly height ÷ 2 + a few cm. If you're under ~5'4" check the minimum height (many desks bottom out too high without a keyboard tray); if you're over 6'2" check the maximum for standing.

Motors and lift capacity

Dual-motor desks (one per leg) lift more, faster, and wobble less at height than single-motor designs. Compare lift capacity to your load — a multi-monitor setup with a PC tower runs 40–60 lbs before you lean on it. More capacity headroom = less motor strain and wobble.

Frame, feet, and wobble

Wobble at standing height comes from the frame: dual-stage (3-segment) legs and crossbars fight it. Desktop material is mostly aesthetics — laminated MDF is the durable default; solid wood costs more and dents anyway.

Memory presets and extras

Height presets sound like a gimmick until you own them — one-touch sit/stand switching is the difference between actually standing and never bothering. Anti-collision and cable trays are worthwhile; built-in USB is filler.
